FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

What types of conditions do you treat?
We work with individuals living with complex neurological and chronic conditions such as Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), concussion, dizziness, stroke, chronic pain, dysautonomia, hypermobility, and related challenges. Our approach focuses on the interaction between the brain, body, and daily life — helping each system work together more effectively.
What makes Tessera Therapy different from other clinics?
Tessera Therapy brings together physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychology within one coordinated team. This integrated model allows us to address movement, regulation, mood, and daily life as connected pieces, rather than separate issues, to support the whole person.
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No, a referral is not required to access our services. However, some extended health benefit plans may require a physician’s referral for reimbursement, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider.
Do you offer virtual or in-home appointments?
Yes. We provide therapy in your home, virtually, or in one of our community-based spaces depending on your comfort, needs, and goals. Virtual care is available to clients across Alberta.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first session will focus on understanding your health history, current symptoms, and goals. We’ll explore how your condition affects daily life and begin developing a plan that feels achievable and meaningful for you. You’ll leave with a clear sense of next steps and what to expect from therapy.
How long are appointments and how often will I need them?
For physical and occupational therapy services, most initial assessments are 60–90 minutes, and follow-up sessions are typically 60 minutes. Psychology sessions are 60 minutes. Frequency depends on your goals and progress — some people meet weekly, while others check in every few weeks. Together, we’ll determine a schedule that best supports your recovery.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes. We can direct bill most major insurance companies. If your plan does not allow direct billing, we’ll provide detailed receipts you can submit for reimbursement.
Are your services covered by Alberta Health?
Tessera Therapy is a private clinic, so our services are not covered by Alberta Health. However, many clients use extended health benefits to cover the cost of therapy.
What if I have multiple conditions or am not sure what’s causing my symptoms?
That’s completely okay — many of our clients experience overlapping or unclear symptoms. Our interdisciplinary approach is designed for exactly that: we focus on function, regulation, and participation rather than a single diagnosis, helping you make progress even when the cause feels complex.
Do you treat children or teens?
We primarily work with adults and teens but can see individuals with complex conditions of any age. Please contact us to discuss whether Tessera Therapy would be the right fit.
